Common brake problems

If you’re not a mechanic, knowing what’s wrong with your brakes can be a tricky business. Here are some of the tell-tale signs and what they mean.

Soft brake pedal

A soft brake pedal is a serious concern. If your brake pedal doesn’t stop on the way down without pumping, or sinks to the floor entirely, stop driving! This symptom normally indicates a leak in the car’s braking system. The most common reason is a leak in the master cylinder, be it internal or external.

Your car pulls to one side when braking

Not only is pulling to one side annoying, it is also highly dangerous. There are several reasons for this to occur, but the most common is a frozen calliper. This can occur over time without being noticed, the pull to one side increasing gradually. Another possibility is that one of your pistons is bent.

The steering wheel shakes when the brakes are applied

A common issue with brakes, particularly when driving at speed, there are also several possible causes. The most common explanation is that your front brake discs are warped, or have slight irregularities from excessive heat. Sometimes the discs can be resurfaced; other times they will need to be replaced. It depends on the extent of the damage.

The brake pedal pulses up and down when applying the brakes

This is another tell-tale sign of your brake discs being warped or out of alignment. As with many car components, this is something that can happen over time, simply due to friction. As above, it is sometimes possible to solve the problem through resurfacing, if the discs are thick enough. If not, replacement may be the only option.

The whole car shakes when the brakes are applied

If the problem is caused in the front of the car, you feel the shaking through the steering wheel. If you feel the shaking through the whole of the car, the problem tends to be in the rear. In this case, it is likely that your rear brakes are damaged in some way.
